Western Cape Rowing Executive

Who Are We?

 

The Western Cape Rowing Association (WCRA) is managed by the Executive Committee who have the objective of promoting, developing, and enhancing rowing in the Western Cape. Our role, mandated by Western Province schools, clubs, and universities, enables the Committee to manage, promote, co-ordinate, control, discipline, and plan the development and performance of rowing in the Province.

 

WCRA a constituent member of Rowing South Africa (RowSA) and operates in close co-operation with RowSA, the South African Rowing Officials Association, and other Regional rowing bodies to promote rowing in South Africa.

 

Our Responsibility
 

WCRA recognizes its responsibility to promote, develop and enhance rowing in the Western Cape. WCRA specifically seeks to grow rowing in the Province, whilst ensuring that the number of athletes transitioning from rowing at school to university & club rowing are retained. Transforming the demographic of rowers within rowing, and aiding individuals seeking to represent the Province and the Country remains a key objective.

 

The WCRA stands for the highest possible standards of sportsmanship, respect for others, honesty, fairness and integrity in the sport.

Bradley Smith

President

Brad has been involved with rowing since 1998, when he started at St Andrews College, Makhanda. His rowing career saw him row at the Junior World Championships, Lithuania; the Student World Games, France; U23s in Netherlands and Belgium. Brad began his coaching career at Radley College, UK, as a Gap student, but began teaching and running the rowing club in 2009 at Jeppe High School, Johannesburg. From there, he worked at St Benedict's from 2013-2016, where he also coached a coxed four and coxless pair to Junior World Champs.

Brad moved to Cape town at the beginning of 2017, where he began his role as an educator and Master-in-Charge of Rowing at Bishops Diocesan College. This is his first year as President of the WCRA.

Paula Barnard

Vice President

Paula has an insatiable love for sports, and in her youth, she used to be a provincial middle-distance athlete, hockey player and coach. The progression to get involved in a sport that her children enjoy was natural. Paula has served on the Bishops Rowing Committee for 3 years. 

 

Paula is also passionate about using sport to transform communities and youth living poverty, and support the dreams and aspirations of young athletes. She firmly believes that rowing is one of those sports that can give athletes the best possible opportunities to change their lives for the better.

Chistina McAdam

Treasurer

Christina’s involvement in rowing started in 1976, watching her Dad igniting schoolboy rowing in the Cape. She was often drafted into cox either at Bishops or Alfreds. Given their Grandfathers passion for the sport, it was not surprising that her two boys took up rowing and so as a parent she continued her involvement as Treasurer of Bishop's rowing.

 

Umpiring was a natural path for Christina, where she can often be found at the finish line of provisional and national regattas. She has served as Treasurer of WC Rowing for 3 years.

Catherine Papas

Secretary

Catherine was exposed to rowing through her two sons at St John's College (SJC), organising rowing camps. Naturally, Catherine became involved as a Gauteng rowing official. The SJC rowing committee had the benefit of having Catherine extensively involved in rowing. 

 

Catherine has since moved to Cape Town, and her love for rowing continues through her involvement with Western Cape Rowing as the Secretary for the Executive. Catherine held the portfolio as events coordinator for two seasons before returning as secretary in 2021.

Ken Gliddon

Equipment Manager

Ken is dad to Louis (SACS) and Darcy (PGRC).  He is also the current Boatman for Peninsula Girls Rowing Club (PGRC) and likes to spend his spare time at the Vlei working on the ever improving fleet with his dog Frank. He also helps out on tours -which Darcy said she is absolutely delighted about!  

 

In his ever decreasing spare time Ken is a keen league tennis player and plays for the Kelvin Grove Tennis Club.  Ken is keen to help develop rowing in the Western Cape has recently joined the Western Cape Rowing Executive.

Christopher Hale

Development & Transformation

Christopher started his rowing career at St John's College, where he missed out on winning SA Champs in the 8+, after falling ill two weeks before. Later this became a driving force that motivated Chris to pick up the handle again at Rhodes University.


Chris captained the Rhodes University Rowing Club during his second season, 

Christopher since has been coaching rowing at Bishop's and seeking to contribute to rowing in the Western Cape has subsequently joined the Western Cape Rowing Executive!

Sissel Telefsen

Events Coordinator

Sissel's involvement in rowing started in 2018 when her daughter started at PGRC. Quickly due to a growing interest, she was inducted to the Peninsula Girls Rowing Club (PGRC) committee and is now currently the chairperson.

 

Since then, Sissel also started rowing, and is an active member of the Alfreds Rowing Club. Sissel is also a past Norwegian Swimming Champion, and held a swimming scholarship at Ohio University, USA. Now, she is enjoying being part of this wonderful sport; rowing, and her role as the Western Cape Rowing's events coordinator.

Muhammad Saloojee

Coaching Commissioner & Liasion

Muhammad started rowing in 2010, at Jeppe High School for Boys in Johannesburg and rowed in the first eight in 2013/14.
 

Muhammad's coaching career started at St Benedict's in 2015 - 2019, where he coached athletes from U13s to Opens, some of which have won medals at the Junior World Championships. Muhammad became a teacher, and can now pursue coaching as a career at SACS. Admirably, he aims to develop the standard of Western Cape rowing through implementing structures to aid coaches and guide athletes achieve their goals.

Craig Arenhold

Marketing Manger

Although Craig states that his direct rowing experience (being time on the water as a rower) is zero, he has been very involved in rowing as a WESPRO pilot, umpire and general organiser for Rondebosch Boys for the last 3 years. 

 

When he is not helping Bosch rowing, he competes in the indoor/ergo online circuit and is constantly trying to better better his 2000m time.
